Optimizing Servo Performance - Galil and Nanomotion Team Up

Piezo-ceramic motors/stages, providing closed loop motion for linear and rotary applications, have often required unique servo settings to optimize the performance. While the frictional characteristic acts as a benefit for built-in holding/braking without power consumption, the same characteristic results in a 'dead zone' around zero volts, which can range to +/-1.5V and require a specific algorithm for proper operation.

Galil Motion Control and Nanomotion have teamed up to develop several algorithms designed to optimize the performance of Nanomotion's piezo ceramic motors with a Galil motion controller. Together, we have optimized the -CER firmware offered by Galil today, and we have added the -NANO firmware which optimizes slow speed constant velocity. The -NANO functions in a high resolution mode allowing for small pulses to be applied, enabling the motor to drive a motion system at several microns per second.

The -CER & -NANO code is available from Galil at no charge. The -CER applies to most of the Galil product line. The -NANO firmware is used with the Galil Accelera motion controllers. For additional information, please contact:
